Why do so many AI company logos look like buttholes?
It’s a question that’s been doing the rounds on Reddit. Despite the not-so-subtle dig at the AI industry it may point to something deeper - if you’ll pardon the phrasing.
And we’re not talking about the phenomenon of “pareidolia,” which stems from the human brain's natural tendency to recognize faces and patterns, even where they don't truly exist.
As an aside, the logo examples under discussion are a perfect illustration of the phenomenon: we humans tend to see things like faces (and other body parts) in images and designs where none were intended.
This instinct runs so deep that seasoned identity studios will actively screen designs to make sure they don’t accidentally resemble penises, butts, or boobs. It’s a thing.
Clearly, no such check was performed when the infamous OGC logo was designed. Google it. Once seen, never unseen, so proceed with caution.
To be fair, they’re not alone. You’d be amazed how often these design face-plants happen.
Search “logo fails” and you’ll see what I mean.
Anyway, back to the point.
My argument here is that, if AI wants to appear more human it might want to reflect on the fact that being a bit of an asshole on occasion is fundamental to the human condition.
If you need convincing, turn on the news.
The saints among us might say “speak for yourself.” And maybe they’re right.
But the rest of us can take cold comfort in knowing we’re in good company.
Kurt Vonnegut - my all-time favourite writer, famously included an A-hole (an asterisk*) in his signature to remind himself of his own and all human fallibility and, given that truth, to stay humble at all times.
So maybe those AI companies are unintentionally onto something.
If you want your AI outputs to feel more human… try building in a little humility.
Because one of the dead giveaways of an AI-generated “thought leadership” post - especially on this platform - is its tone: Paternalistic. Tough-love. A bit too sure of itself. Like it’s cosplaying Jordan Peterson. Ugh!
They AI authors of these post might do better to channel a little more Vonnegut.*
